Faraday Rotation of Microwave Background Polarization by a Primordial Magnetic Field
نویسندگان
چکیده
The existence of a primordial magnetic field at the last scattering surface may induce a measurable Faraday rotation in the polarization of the cosmic microwave background. We calculate the magnitude of this effect by evolving the radiative transfer equations for the microwave background polarization through the epoch of last scatter, in the presence of a magnetic field. For a primordial field amplitude corresponding to a present value of 10G (which would account for the observed galactic field if it were frozen in the pre-galactic plasma), we find a rotation angle of around 1 at a frequency of 30 GHz. The statistical detection of this signal is feasible with future maps of the microwave background. Faraday Rotation of the Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization and Primordial Magnetic Field Properties
Measurements of the Faraday rotation of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) polarization could provide evidence for the existence of primordial magnetic fields. The Faraday rotation could also allow the study of some properties of these fields. In this paper, we calculate the angular dependence of the Faraday rotation correlator for different assumptions about the spectral index an...
متن کاملPolarization-Temperature Correlation from a Primordial Magnetic Field
We propose a new method for constraining a primordial homogeneous magnetic field with the cosmic microwave background. Such a field will induce an observable parity odd cross correlation between the polarization anisotropy and the temperature anisotropy by Faraday rotation. We analyze the necessary experimental features to match, and improve, current constraints of such a field by measuring thi...
متن کاملSignatures of primordial helicity in the CMBR
We have studied ways in which helical primordial magnetic fields could be constrained by measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR). If there were helical flows in the primordial plasma at the time of recombination, they would produce parity violating temperature-polarization correlations (C l and C EB l ). However, the magnitude of helical flows induced by helical magneti...
متن کاملFaraday Rotation Effect of Intracluster Magnetic Field on Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization
The observed magnetic field of microgauss strength in clusters of galaxies should induce the Faraday rotation effect on the linearly polarized cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation when the CMB radiation propagates through a cluster at low redshift. The Faraday rotation arises from combined contributions of the magnetic field strength, the electron density, the cluster size, and the chara...
متن کاملCosmic microwave background polarization, Faraday rotation, and stochastic gravity-waves backgrounds
A magnetic field, coherent over the horizon size at the decoupling and strong enough to rotate the polarization plane of the CMBR, can be generated from the electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations amplified by the space-time evolution of the dilaton coupling. The possible relevance of this result for superstring inspired cosmological models is discussed. Particular attention will be paid to the con...
